John Henry was born 13-Dec-1870 in Hythe, Kent [B-Cert] to Sydney CUMNER & Miriam Crane MATTHEWS.
He was shown loving in Hade Street, St. Leonards in the 1871 Census. He died 18-Jan-1937 in Guildford, Surrey. I have not been able to trace his marriage but his long term partner was Ada Catherine JAMES (nee HAZZARD). He had 4 children of which 3 can be confirmed from Ada from his milirary records.
On 18-Sep-1886 he enlisted with the Queens Royal West Surrey Regiment at Guildford giving his age as 18yrs, 8 months. He was transferred to Gosport on 23-Mar-1894 aged 26yrs 1month.
On 24-Mar-1900 he served in South Africa and was awarded the South African Medal. However, he forfeited this due to an offence in Bermuda in 1889 when he stuck Pte HALLAM.
On 1-Jul-1902 he transferred to the Leicester Regiment, aged 34yrs 5mths living Brookside Cottage, Sandhurst.
On 16-Mar-1903 he was discharged after completing his 1st period of limited engagement. He gave his next of kin as Ada CUMNER, Brookside Cottage, Sandhurst.
On 9-Dec-1914 he was called up for the Military Foot Police giving his home address as 1 Wellington Hall, Sandhurst aged 47yrs, 0mths. His next of kin was Mrs A. C. JAMES (unofficial wife of 17 years) and he had 3 children:

On 13-Aug-1919 he was demobbed at Aldershot.
